Italian Diaspora Studies Writing Retreat 2023

Cetraro (CS), Calabria, May 12-22, 2023

In response to the successful inaugural launch of the 2019 Italian Diaspora Studies program, we are pleased to announce a new residential retreat, made possible by the Italian Diaspora Studies Association, in conjunction with the Department of Humanities at the University of Calabria.

After almost three years of the pandemic and multiple global crises, including the war in Ukraine, many of us are in need of a respite from the stress of our day to day lives. Thus, we are restarting our 2023 residential program with a new perspective. The purpose of the retreat format is to provide participants with the space and time to focus on their writing and on other creative and intellectual pursuits away from the pressures and distractions of everyday life.

The program will be held in the town of Cetraro, in the province of Cosenza, on the Northern Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria. This borgo is rich in history and natural beauty, with a stunning view of the coast. The retreat will take place in the historical Grand Hotel S. Michele, one of the best in Calabria. Because of the beauty and solitude of its mountain-top location, the hotel is an ideal place to write, reflect, relax, learn, and enjoy the company of an international group of participants. The property includes a large farm, golf course, swimming pool, and a private beach reachable by an elevator down the mountainside. The restaurant uses the hotel’s farm-grown products, including vegetables, fruit, olive oil, and wine. The cuisine is of high quality, local, seasonal and organic. Please take a look at the hotel’s website:
