From the academic year 2014-15, the Department of Humanistic Studies at the University of Calabria has established the first course of the Italian national university system dedicated to the Italian/American Culture and Literature of the United States and Canada.
A partire dall'anno accademico 2014-15, il Dipartimento di Studi umanistici dell'Università della Calabria ha istituito il primo corso del sistema universitario nazionale italiano dedicato alla cultura e alla letteratura italoamericana degli Stati Uniti e del Canada.
The course in Italian American Culture and Literatue (CLIA) is the first and still the only official full course on Italian American literature and culture in the Italian public university system. It is compulsory for the students of the «Laurea magistrale» (equivalent of US Master) in Modern Philology, section Italian Studies.
The course takes place entirely in English, in seminar style. The exams are written, according to the teaching model of the North American universities.
The Director of the course is Prof. Margherita Ganeri, Professor of Contemporary Italian Literature at the University of Calabria.
In the first four years, the course hosted between 4 and 6 visiting professors a year from the United States and Canada. Each of them taught for a week or two, then followed the students' written work by email and SKYPE.
From the academic year 2019-20, the course is associated with a prestigious Fulbright Lectureship, the only one in the humanities in Italy and the only one in the center-south.
The chair is financed by the Foundation "Italian Diaspora Studies" of Pittsburgh (PA, USA), whose President is the businessman and scholar Samuel J. Patti, and whose Academic Director is Prof. Margherita Ganeri.
Il corso in Italian American Culture and Literatue (CLIA) è il primo e finora unico corso istituzionale completo dedicato alla Cultura e alla letteratura italo-americana in un'università pubblica in Italia. Il corso è obbligatorio per gli studenti della Laurea Magistrale in Filologia moderna, curriculum Italian Studies.
Il corso si svolge interamente in lingua inglese, in forma seminariale. Gli esami sono scritti, secondo il modello di insegnamento delle università nordamericane.
Titolare del corso è la Prof.ssa Margherita Ganeri, Ordinaria di Letteratura italiana contemporanea all'Università della Calabria.
Nei primi quattro anni dall'attivazione, il corso ha ospitato tra i 4 e i 6 visiting professors all'anno, provenienti da Stati Uniti e Canada. Ognuno di loro ha insegnato per una o due settimane, seguendo poi a distanza i lavori scritti degli studenti.
Dall'anno accademico 2019-20, il corso è associato a una prestigiosa cattedra Fulbright, l'unica di ambito umanistico in Italia e l'unica nel centro-Sud.

The winner of the first Fulbright Lectureship is Distinguished Professor Stanislao G. Pugliese, who will hold the CLIA course, at UniCal, from March to June 2020.
Stanislao G. Pugliese is Professor of modern European history and the Queensboro Unico Distinguished Professor of Italian and Italian American Studies at Hofstra University, NY, USA.
